Xiao Xun

  • Xiao Xun (1883-1944), courtesy name Qianzhong and art name Dailong Shanqu, was a modern painter born in Huaining County, Anhui Province. In his youth, he studied landscape painting under Jiang Yun. He was known for his technique of layering paints multiple times in his landscape paintings.

    • Zeng Xi

      Zeng Xi, courtesy name Ziji, art name Nongran, was born in Hengyang, Hunan Province. He was a renowned educator, painter, calligrapher, connoisseur, and collector during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China. He was a leading figure in the modern Shanghai School of painting and calligraphy. Along with Wu Changshuo, Shen Zengzhi, and Li Ruiqing, he was known as one of the "Four Great Calligraphers of the Early Republic of China."

      Wang Xueteo, courtesy name was Xiao Feng, art name was Chi Yuan, born in Cheng’an Hebei, a well-known Chinese modern freehand bird-and-flower painter. He served as director of the Beijing Painting Institute, director of the China Artists Association, vice president of the Beijing Branch of Artists Association, representative of the Beijing City Seventh National People’s Congress, managing member of the Beijing Fifth China People’s Political Consultative Conference, member of the Central Union Committee of the Democratic Party of China, commissioner of Beijing city.

    • Yan Bolong

      Yan Bolong, a Manchu from the Plain Yellow Banner, was a native of Beijing. His given name was Yunlin, his courtesy name was Bolong (used as his common name), and his pseudonym was Changbai Buyi (Long White Cloth Scholar). He resided in a place called Chuncao Tang (Spring Grass Hall). During the Republic of China period, Yan was a prominent figure in the Beijing-Tianjin painting school, renowned for his bird-and-flower paintings. He was also skilled in landscapes, figures, feathers, and animals. Yan disliked officialdom and preferred to live as an ordinary scholar, devoting himself to painting. Due to his ancestral roots in Changbai, he became known as Changbai Buyi (Long White Cloth Scholar).

    • Wang Rong

      Wang Liu, Chinese characters meaning "Shin Sheng" and his family name meaning "Manichuan villager", was originally from Wei County, Anhui Province. He was a student in Lanxi, Zhejiang Province when he was young, and later lived by painting maritime paintings and charcoal drawings, teaching at Beijing Hua Fine Arts School, Beijing Fu-Jen University Fine Arts Department, and Beijing Normal University from 1934. During the Republic of China period, he became as famous as Chen Hanting and Wang Xuetao.

      Wu Hufan, originally named Yi Yan, courtesy name Yujun, later changed his name to Wan, and his pseudonym was Dongzhuang. He also used the name Qian and signed his works as Hufan. Born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, he was an important figure in modern Chinese painting and also a renowned expert in calligraphy and painting appraisal.

      Cao Rulin (1877-1966), courtesy name Runtian, was a high-ranking official in the early Republic of China and the leader of the New Communications Clique. Before the May Fourth Movement, he served as Minister of Transportation, Minister of Finance, and General Manager of the Bank of Communications. He was also a politician in the Beiyang Government (Beijing Government).
