How to Bid

Applications for participating in auctions are welcomed any time at Jo’s Auction.
You can choose from bidding on site at the auction venue, telephone bidding or document bidding.

  • Catalog

Catalogs will be prepared about 3 weeks prior to the auction date. The same content will be posted on the website as well.

  • Inspection tour

Participants will have a chance to verify all the exhibits with their own eyes prior to the auction. We strongly encourage participants to participate in the inspection tour to inspect the actual color and conditions of the exhibits because they may differ from pictures posted in the catalog. (Online auction are not available for viewing. Please check the online lot descriptions. Detailed image could be provided per request.)

  • Membership registration

Membership registration is required to participate and to place a bid in the auction. To register, fill in the prescribed “Registration Form”, present your identification (for individuals: driver’s license, passport, etc. for corporate businesses: the original certified copy of register, officially registered seal, etc.), and pay your deposit.

  • How to bid

    Online bidding
You may choose from the following three procedures.

    A. Bidding at the venue
After checking in at the reception desk and have completed paying the deposit, you will receive a paddle (number card). (Lending your paddle to another person is prohibited) During the auction, each exhibit will be put up for bid in the order of the number shown in the catalog and the auctioneer will bid up the price. If you wish to make a bid, raise your paddle for the auctioneer to see. When the auctioneer strikes the hammer, the paddle number of the winning buyer is called out. Canceling a winning bid after the bid is closed is not allowed. Also, we may deny entry based on our own judgement for smooth operation of the auction.

    B. Telephone bidding
If you cannot participate in the auction at the venue, you can choose to make a bid via telephone. You will need to register, deposit your security money and send in your balance certificate for us to confirm, 10 days prior to the auction. Also, in advance, please be aware that only a limited number of telephone operators and telephone lines are available and there may also be a chance of any kind of flaw due to using telephone lines.
    Absentee Bids Form

    C. Document bidding
If you cannot participate in the auction at the venue, you can choose to make a bid via document. Fill in the “Absentee Bids Form” and send it in via mail, fax or E-mail, 10 days prior to the auction. Also, complete the payment of your deposit and send in your balance certificate for us to confirm.

  • Payment

Please make your payment for the total sum of the hammer price (winning buyer’s offered amount at closing), bidding commission (18%) and consumption tax within 7 days after the auction is closed. Payment can be made by cash, bank transfer, or credit card. Your deposit will be returned after the payment for the successful bid is completed. In case you choose to make your payment by bank transfer or in person by visiting the office, please contact us beforehand.

  • Deliver up the exhibit

After the payment is completed, the exhibit will be delivered up to the buyer. Should the payment be completed on the day of the auction, the exhibit will be delivered up to the buyer at the venue. Should the payment be made after the auction, the exhibit will be delivered up to the buyer after the payment has been completed.

Special Notation

1. Prior to the auction, bidders are required to read through and confirm the “Auction Rules” without fail, and for whatever reason must not violate the rules and are subject to bear any risks and responsibility concerning their own chosen exhibit. Should there be any violation of the rules, the buyer will be held responsible for violating the contract.

2. Should the total amount of winning buyer’s offered amount at closing of the purchase agreement concluded at the auction site be over one hundred million JPY, the bidder will be temporarily suspended from bidding and the bidder will recover one’s right to bid once the payment for the total amount of winning buyer’s offered amount at closing is completed.
