Wang Yachen

  • Wang Yachen (1894-1983) was born in Hangzhou Zhejiang, originally from Taiping (now Huangshan). In 1915, he and Chen and others established China’s first painting association called “the Oriental Painting Association”. He came to Japan in 1916, graduated from the Western Painting Department of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1921, and returned to China in the same year, and served as the professor and the chief of Shanghai Art College. From 1928 to 1931, he went to Europe for research, and after returning to China, he was the principal of the Qing Arts College and the principal of the Xinhua Arts Normal School. In 1947, he traveled to the United States, held lectures and painting exhibitions, and worked to spread Chinese painting.

    • Wu Xiaoren

      Wu Xiaoren, whose courtesy name was Jinghu, was also known as Jinhuwaishi, and later as Laojing. During the Republic of China, he was good at calligraphy and poetry. He became famous for imitating Liu Shi'an to get his essence.

    • Pan Boying

      Pan Boying, one of the founders of Shanghai Xinhua Art College. One of his books is Kaiming Music Course. "Shanse" in "Qingliang Geji" written by Shi Hongyi (Lee Shutong) is a representative song composed by him. He also paints Chinese paintings, specializing in paintings of flowers and insects.

    • Wang Chuantao

      Wang Chuantao, whose courtesy name was Jimei, was born in Wuxing, Zhejiang (now Huzhou) on February 14, 1903, and passed away on February 6, 1978, at the age of 75. He was the third son of the renowned master Wang Yiting, a leading figure of the Shanghai School during the late Qing and early Ming periods.

      Deng Sanmu was born in Shanghai. His calligraphy was excellent in all four scripts: regular script, cursive script, clerical script, and seal script. His style of calligraphy was magnificent, and also he was good at seal carving.
