Shang Shengbo

  • Shang Shengbo, named Yanzhi, styled Shengbo (using his style as his name), and known by the art name Anlu, was from Zhejiang. In the early Republic of China period, he maintained close relationships in Shanghai with prominent painters such as Wu Changshuo, Wang Yiting, and Ni Mogen. He excelled in painting flowers and birds, and insects, and occasionally painted animals and figures. His brushwork was pure and elegant, capturing the spirit of the Ming masters.

    • Wu Changshuo

      Wu Changshuo (1844-1927), a prominent Chinese calligrapher, painter and seal carver of the late Qing Dynasty, formerly known as Jun Qing, courtesy name was Changshuo, art name was Kutie, born in Anji Zhejiang. In his childhood, he was influenced by his father and began to like painting and seal carving. He learned regular script from Yan Lugong and Zhong Yuanchang, clerical script from Han Dynasty stone carving, seal script from Tang Dynasty stone carving. The brushwork was influenced by Deng Shiru and Zhao Zhiqian. He was good at painting flowers and had a unique style of painting such as brush movement and composition. In ink brushes, flowers such as plums and peony, trees and stones were noble and beautiful, and his brushstrokes were vigorous and breathtaking.

    • Xiao tui'an

      Xiao Tui’an, art name was Tui An, Han Chan and Zuisong Laoren, born in Changshu Jiangsu. In his later years he moved to Suzhou. In his youth he lived in Shanghai and taught at Chengdong Women’s School and Aiguo Women’s Scool.

    • Wang Yiting

      Wang Yiting, courtesy name is Yiting, art name is Bai longshan ren, Meihua guan zhu, Hai Yunshan zhu deng and so on. He was born in Qingpu, Shanghai. He is a famous artist and Comprador in the last years of Qing dynasty, the early years of Republic of China. He was a buddhist for life. He learned painting from Xu Xiaocang when he was young.

    • Zhao Shuru

      Zhao Shuru(1874-1945) was born in Yinxian (now Ningbo) Zhejiang. Original name was Run Xiang, courtesy name was Xian Chen and Shuru, later he changed his name to Shi Zhe, art name was Ren Chang, in his later years he named himself Ernu Laoren also known as Shu Ru. Late Qing Dynasty, he appointed in a government post named ‘Tong Zhi’ in Fujian Province. After the Republic of China was established, he lived in seclusion in Shanghai. He is good at epigraph, painting and calligraphy, flowers, plants, insects and animals, especially painting horses ,and can be called “the Zhao Mengfu of modern times”.

    • Jin Mengshi

      Jin Mengshi, other name was He, courtesy name was Meng Shi, was born in Wu Xian Jiangsu. He was a calligrapher of the end of Qing Dynasy and the Republic of China. He was a member of Shanghai Painting and Calligraphy Research Association, and one of the representatives of the Shanghai Painting School. Many of his works has human figures and flowers illustrated within them.
