Donggao Xinyue

  • Donggao Xunyue, courtesy name was Xin Yue, art name was Dong Gao, born in Pujiang Zhejiang. He was good at calligraphy, painting and seal carving, and was also talented at music. Since he came to Japan, he had great influence on Japanese culture. He founded the Shou Changyi School of the Caodong Zen Buddhism sect, and he socialized a wide range of Japanese monks. He transmitted the Guqin music (a plucked seven-string musical instrument) which had lost its tradition in Japan. He also learned Japanese, and transmitted Japanese poem Waka and Haiku to the world.

      Tang Qichang (1555-1636), courtesy name was Xuan Zai, art name was Si Bai and Xiangguang Jushi, born in Huating. He wsa talented and had great abilities in poetry, calligraphy and painting. He preferred painting landscape, and put emphasis on traditional techniques, and pursued brushstrokes and color to create beautiful works. His works had a great influence on the art world in the Late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, and also on the present day, they are still being pursued by collectors all over the world.

      Shen Quan (1682-1760), art name was Heng Zhi, art name was Nan Ping, born in Huzhou Zhejiang, a painter of the Qing Dynasty. He started working as a painter around the age of 20. The flowers, animals and feathers of his works were painted delicately and elegantly, and especially he was good at painting women. He studied abroad in Japan for three years, and he created the bird-and-flower paintng of “Nanping School of Painting”. His works were highly acclaimed in Japan.

      Ji Fei Ruyi, born in Fuqing, Fujian in 1616. A Zen priest of Fuqing Huangbo Mountain Wanfu Temple in the last years of Qing Dynasty. One of 32th Linzhu sect, Xuan Yuan Longqi’s disciple. His works are stored all over the world as Yuan Yuan Longqi, Muan Xingxian and they are known as "Three strokes of Huangbo".

      Yinyuan Longqi, The Zen monk in the late Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty, was born in Fuqing Prefecture, Fuzhou Prefecture, Fujian. He went to Japan to spread Buddhism with Daozhechaoyuan. They had a great influence on the reconstruction of the Rinzai sect and the Soto sect of the Japanese Zen sect at that time. He is also the founder of the Obaku sect of Japanese Zen sect and the founder of Senchado.
