【Exhibition Overview】

Founded in Taipei in 1995 by collector Ho Kuo-ching, the Ho Chuang-shih Calligraphy Foundation celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025. Renowned for its outstanding collection of Ming and Qing dynasty calligraphy, the Foundation actively promotes the art of calligraphy through exhibitions, lectures, and scholarly programs, earning widespread recognition among Japanese calligraphers and researchers.

This exhibition presents 82 carefully selected works from the Foundation's collection, focusing on calligraphy from the mid-Ming period through the transition from the late Ming to the early Qing dynasty. Among them, 72 works are being exhibited in Japan for the first time. Featuring masterpieces by renowned calligraphers including Wen Zhengming, Dong Qichang, Wang Duo, Zhang Ruitu, and Huang Daozhou, the exhibition highlights the remarkable diversity and expressive vitality of Ming calligraphy, as well as its lasting influence on Japanese Karayō (Chinese-style) calligraphy and later calligraphic traditions.

【About the Ho Chuang-shih Calligraphy Foundation (Ho Chuang-shih Collection)】

The Ho Chuang-shih Calligraphy Foundation, based in Taipei, was established in 1995 by its chairman and collector Ho Kuo-ching, in honor of his father. Its collection centers on Ming and Qing dynasty calligraphy and includes more than 2,500 works by over 2,000 artists and scholars, including Wang Yangming, Xu Wei, Wang Duo, Zhang Ruitu, Huang Daozhou, and Ni Yuanlu. Throughout the year, the Foundation organizes exhibitions and academic programs while actively promoting international cultural exchange. It has lent works to major calligraphy exhibitions in Japan and elsewhere, serving as an important bridge for East Asian calligraphic culture. In recent years, the Foundation has also established the Chuang-shih Lecture Hall and an Online Museum, making its collection accessible for research and education. This special exhibition at the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts presents the Foundation's renowned Ming dynasty collection on an unprecedented scale in Japan, featuring 82 works, nearly 90% of which (72 works) are being shown in Japan for the first time.
