【Exhibition Overview】

Chiyu Uemae (1920–2018), a founding member of the Gutai Art Association, continued to embrace the experimental spirit of Gutai long after the group's dissolution. Throughout his life, he pursued a unique artistic vision by constantly discovering new forms of beauty in everyday life, working across a wide range of media including painting, stitched works, sculpture, and printmaking.

This exhibition focuses on Uemae's highly original stitched works while also presenting his early figurative paintings, later abstract paintings, sculptures, and prints. Through the rich chromatic harmonies and tactile surfaces created by countless accumulated dots, together with the distinctive sculptural beauty achieved through densely stitched threads, the exhibition explores the essence of Uemae's lifelong artistic practice and the profound spirituality that underpins his work.
