[Overview]
This exhibition presents masterpieces from the Ohara Museum of Art, one of Japan’s earliest Western art museums. Founded in 1930, the museum began with fewer than one hundred works, which gradually expanded into one of Japan’s most important collections. Many of the works were acquired in Europe by the painter Torajiro Kojima, with the support of industrialist Magosaburo Ohara. Their shared aspiration—to introduce authentic art to the Japanese public—led to the establishment of the museum. Although Kojima passed away in 1929 before its completion, his vision continues today.

With the Ohara Museum currently closed for renovation, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view its treasured works outside the museum. Highlighted works include El Greco’s The Annunciation, Paul Gauguin’s The Earthly Paradise, and Claude Monet’s Water Lilies. Visitors are invited to follow Torajiro’s footsteps and embark on a journey through the world of great paintings.
