Introduce: Takeo Matsumoto (1937-) has been creating exceptional works for over 60 years, intertwining the expressions, textures, and presence of materials with the vibrations and flows of life. In the early 1960s, he gained recognition as a prominent second-generation member of the Gutai Art Association through his relief works, which featured organic forms created using vinyl adhesives (bond), a new material at the time. In 1966, he moved to France and, based in Paris, began exploring the field of printmaking, which was at the forefront of contemporary art. From his exploration of spatiality and temporality in planar media, his expression eventually evolved into hard-edge representations characterized by geometric yet organic forms and vivid colors.
This exhibition, based on the latest research, showcases over 200 pieces, including works, documents, and videos from Matsumoto’s early to latest creations, providing a comprehensive overview of his artistic journey.
