Rosenthal originated in 1879, when Philipp Rosenthal established a porcelain decorating workshop at Erkersreuth Castle in Selb, Bavaria, and began producing porcelain in his own factory in 1891. The company subsequently became one of Germany's leading porcelain manufacturers. From the mid-twentieth century, Rosenthal embraced modern design through collaborations with leading artists, architects and designers. Its 'studio-line', established in 1961, included collaborations with figures such as Walter Gropius and Raymond Loewy, helping to establish porcelain as an important medium of modern design.
