  JASPER JOHNS is one of the most influential figures in post-war American art, occupying a pivotal position in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art. Since the mid-1950s, he has employed familiar motifs—including flags, targets, numbers, and alphabets—to investigate the relationship between image, materiality, perception, and meaning. Characterised by his distinctive use of encaustic, his richly layered surfaces challenge conventional distinctions between representation and abstraction. Extending his practice across painting, printmaking, and sculpture, Johns has profoundly influenced subsequent developments in Conceptual Art and Minimalism through his sustained inquiry into the nature of visual language. His landmark 1958 debut exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery established his international reputation, and his works are held in the collections of major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
