JASPER JOHNS

  • JASPER JOHNS is regarded as one of the leading figures in American contemporary art. Using everyday and symbolic motifs such as the American flag, targets, numbers, and alphabets, he explored the relationship between image and perception. Beginning his career in the late 1950s, he became known as an important artist during the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art. His works are characterized by richly textured surfaces created through the encaustic technique using wax, and he produced paintings, prints, and sculptures across a wide range of media. He continues to be highly acclaimed as one of the most significant figures in postwar and contemporary art history.
