  SHIMAMOTO SHOZO was one of the central figures of the Gutai Art Association, a leading force in the postwar Japanese avant-garde, from its founding. A student of Yoshihara Jiro, he took part in the formation of the Gutai Art Association in 1954 and proposed the name "Gutai." In 1956, he developed experimental methods that departed from conventional painting techniques, including Cannon Painting, in which paint was fired from a metal tube, and Bottle Crash, in which bottles filled with paint were hurled against a hard surface, incorporating physical action itself into the process of painting. A defining characteristic of Shimamoto's work was his incorporation of time and movement into painting by fixing splashes, drips, and traces produced through chance onto the picture plane.
  
  In the present work, vivid colors of yellow, orange, red, green, and blue overlap across a predominantly white ground, with countless splashes, lines, and drips spreading across the surface. Particularly striking is the large fragment of a bottle hurled together with the paint that remains at the center of the composition, directly preserving the impact of the act of creation and its material traces on the picture plane. The irregular interplay of colors generates a powerful sense of movement and contingency within the static picture plane, evoking Shimamoto's development from Cannon Painting to Bottle Crash, in which the scattering of paint and the breaking of bottles became integral to the act of painting itself.
