  MAN RAY was a pioneering American-born artist whose practice played a defining role in the development of both Dada and Surrealism. After beginning his career in New York, he settled in Paris in 1921, where he worked alongside leading avant-garde figures including Marcel Duchamp and André Breton. Moving fluidly between photography, painting, objects, and film, he consistently challenged conventional artistic boundaries. His experimental innovations—most notably the camera-less Rayographs and the creative use of solarisation—significantly expanded the expressive possibilities of photography. Guided by chance, experimentation, and the exploration of the unconscious, Man Ray developed a distinctive visual language that questioned the boundaries between reality and imagination. His groundbreaking practice has had a lasting impact on the history of modern art and photography, influencing generations of artists, with works now held in the collections of major museums worldwide.
