Born in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Deeply moved by Kawakami Sumio's woodblock print Early Summer Breeze, he decided to pursue a career as a printmaker. From 1942 onward, Munakata referred to his prints as "hanga" (woodcut prints) and consistently created works that emphasized the unique qualities of woodblock printing. Owing to his remarkable achievements, he gained international recognition as a master of woodcut prints. He also produced works of calligraphy and hand-painted paintings, which he referred to as Yamato-e.
