UMEHARA RYUZABURO, a Japanese Western-style painter, was born in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. He studied oil painting in France and freely incorporated elements of traditional Japanese art—such as Momoyama painting, the Rinpa school, and Nanga—into European painting techniques. His works, characterized by brilliant colors and bold brushstrokes, developed into a highly decorative artistic style.
Around 1939, Umehara made several visits to Beijing, where he stayed and produced a number of works inspired by the historic city. The architecture, city walls, and expansive scenery of the ancient capital opened new possibilities for his landscape painting, leading to a series of works depicting subjects such as the Forbidden City and the urban landscapes of Beijing. During this period, he also created numerous figure paintings of Chinese women, often referred to as "guniang" (young lady) portraits, which reflect his interest in exotic motifs and vibrant color expression. Through his diverse subjects—including still lifes, landscapes, and figure paintings—he became a significant figure in the Japanese Western-style painting scene during the Shōwa period and firmly established his position in modern Japanese art.
