MAURICE DE VLAMINCK, was a leading French painter of the early twentieth century and one of the central figures of Fauvism. Born in Paris, he received no formal academic training in art and developed his painting largely through self-instruction. In 1900 he met André Derain, an encounter that marked the beginning of his serious engagement with painting. His works exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1905 attracted considerable attention for their vigorous brushwork and intense use of color, and he came to be recognized, alongside Henri Matisse, as a principal representative of Fauvism. Around 1908 his style gradually shifted toward more subdued tonalities, and he increasingly devoted himself to landscapes depicting villages, country roads, riverbanks, and winter scenes in various regions of France.
The present work depicts a snow-covered village street. A road extends into the depth of the composition, flanked by houses on both sides, creating a sense of spatial recession and a quiet rural atmosphere. The painting is dominated by restrained greys and browns, with thickly applied paint and vigorous brushwork visible across the surface. Snow on the rooftops and road is rendered with broad, simplified strokes, while the heavy clouded sky reinforces the stillness of the winter landscape. The work exemplifies Vlaminck's repeated engagement with rural scenery and winter motifs in his landscape painting.
