CHARLES-FRANÇOIS DAUBIGNY, was one of the leading landscape painters of nineteenth-century France and a major figure of the Barbizon School, which played a crucial role in the development of naturalistic landscape painting. Born in Paris, he studied drawing and painting under his father, the printmaker Edmond-François Daubigny, and began his career as a landscape painter at an early age. Emphasizing direct observation of nature, he devoted much of his work to scenes of the French countryside, particularly the river landscapes of the Seine and the Oise. In 1857 Daubigny famously converted a boat into a floating studio known as Le Botin, from which he traveled along rivers while painting. This innovative practice allowed him to observe changing light and atmosphere directly on site and later influenced younger painters associated with Impressionism. His works are characterized by broad compositions, subdued tonalities, and an emphasis on atmosphere and the quiet poetry of nature.
The present work, Sunset, depicts a tranquil riverside landscape. A wide expanse of sky and calm water dominates the horizontal composition, while distant trees, rural houses, and small figures along the bank are discreetly placed within the scene, suggesting the quiet harmony between nature and rural life. Near the horizon, the fading light of evening filters through the clouds, creating subtle tonal variations across the sky and water. Rendered with restrained color and soft brushwork, the painting conveys the gradual transition of light and atmosphere at dusk. The broad treatment of sky and water and the attention to atmospheric effects are characteristic elements of Daubigny's landscape painting, making this work a representative example of his poetic interpretation of nature.
