Exhibited: Ando Tadao Youth, VS. Grand Green Osaka, March 20 - July 21, 2025
From March 19 to July 21, 2025, the exhibition Tadao Ando: Youth, held at Grand Green Osaka drew significant attention as a comprehensive overview of the architect's half-century of challenges. The exhibition presented a wide range of projects, from private residences to public buildings, through models, sketches, and immersive video installations that revealed the essence of Ando's architecture. The highlight that most captivated visitors was the full-scale reconstruction of his iconic Church on the Water, completed in 1988 in Tomamu, Hokkaido. Within the serene concrete space, the cross standing at the center resonated with the water's surface, which mirrored the sky and the natural scenery of the four seasons, providing visitors with a profound spiritual experience. Its expression changes with the cycle of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, reflecting a different charm in each season. When the glass doors open, the chapel merges seamlessly with the surrounding landscape, where light, water, wind, and sound fused together. This space embodied the "fusion of nature and faith" and expressed the very core of Ando's architectural philosophy. This symbolic installation of the exhibition is now presented at auction.
