According to written records, this lot is a portrait that René Magritte gifted to Commander Marius Delsaux in 1923. During his military service from 1920 to 1921, Magritte was under the care of Commander Delsaux, and as a token of gratitude, he specially created this painting. Magritte served in the Belgian army from December 1920 to September 1921, stationed in Brussels, Antwerp, the Beverlo barracks (near Bourg-Léopold), and the vicinity of Aix-la-Chapelle. During this period, he continued his artistic pursuits. Marius Delsaux, on the other hand, was primarily stationed in Brussels and the Beverlo barracks after World War I, suggesting that the two likely established their connection during this time. In addition to this 1923 work, Magritte also created portraits of other military officers, including a 1921 portrait of Captain Albert Thahon.
This certificate was officially issued by the Magritte Committee on November 25, 2020, in Brussels, confirming that the painting "Untitled (Portrait of Commander Marius Delsaux)" is an authentic work by the Belgian Surrealist master René Magritte (1898-1967). The artwork was created in 1923 and is an oil on canvas (huile sur toile), measuring 55×40 cm. Depicting Commander Marius Delsaux, the painting reflects Magritte's early artistic style. The committee conducted a thorough examination of the piece, verifying its provenance and artistic value, further confirming its authenticity. This certificate bears the signature of Bernard de Launoit, Secretary General of the Magritte Committee. It serves as an essential reference for academic research and provides authoritative validation of the artwork's significance and value in the art market.
RENÉ MAGRITTE, a surrealist painter from Lessines, Belgium. In Magritte's works, he often repositions objects or images from their original places to unexpected locations, or brings together unrelated objects to create surprise using the technique of détournement. This creates a surreal world that had a significant impact on later movements such as pop art and advertising design.
