IMAI TOSHIMITSU, born in Kyoto, studied as an outbound student at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1952, he studied abroad in France and influenced by the critic Michelle Tapie, and his style changed to abstract. His works exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1953 and the Venice Biennale in 1960. He received the Excellence Award at the Contemporary Japanese Art exhibition in 1962. After 1970, he incorporated Japanese culture into his works and later created works on the themes of the Japanese invasion and World War II. Major Collections: the Ohara Museum of Art, the National Museum of Art, Osaka, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.
