  UEMURA SHOEN, Japanese-style painter, born in Kyoto. She specialized in elegant paintings of beautiful woman. While in school, she studied under SUZUKI SHOEN, a Japanese-style painter. In 1941, she became a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1948 became the first woman to be awarded the Order of Culture.
