Wang Hui

  • Wang Hui (1632-1717), courtesy name was Xiang Wen and Shi Gu, art name was Qu Qiao, Tianfang Xianren, Xueli Daoren, Hai Yu, Shan Qiao, Qinghui Zhuren, etc., born in Changshu Jiangsu, a prominent painter of the Qing Dynasty. He was good at panting landscapes, human figures, flowers, birds and insects, they were painted smooth with light ink.

      Shen Zhou, courtesy name Qinan, and pseudonym Shitian, was the founder of the Wu School of painting and one of the Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty. He was deeply engaged in poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting, and is considered the initiator of the "Wu School" style of literati painting during the mid-Ming period. Shen Zhou, along with Wen Zhengming, Tang Yin, and Qiu Ying, is collectively known as one of the "Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty" (明四家).

      Yun Shouping, courtesy name was Shou Ping, art name was Nan Tian, a prominent modern painter and calligrapher of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, a founder of Changzhou School of Painting. Later he became one of the six great landscape painters in early Qing Dynasty “Qing Liu Jia”.

      Wang Shimin (1592-1680), courtesy name was Xun Zhi, art name was Yan Ke and Ouxie Daoren, later he changed to Xilu Laoren, born in Taicang Suzhou, a painter of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, the grandson of the scholar Wang Xijue, the son of the Hanlin editor Wang Heng, one of the Four Wangs. In the Ming Dynasty, he learned painting from Dong Qichang. His painting had a great influence on the Qing Dynasty, and he taught painting to Wang Hui, Wu Li and his grandson Wang Yuanqi. He founded the landscape painting “Gongdong School” and together with Wang Jian, Wang Hui and Wang Yuanqi were called the “Four Wangs”, and inclusive of Yun Shouping and Wu Li, they were called “Six Masters of the early Qing Dyansty”.
