[Overview]
The Japanese archipelago has a ceramic tradition spanning more than 10,000 years. Within this long history, Sueki ware emerged around 1,600 years ago, following earlier traditions such as Jomon pottery and Yayoi pottery.
Sueki production marked the first full-scale use of kilns in Japan. The introduction of the anagama (tunnel kiln), built along hillsides, enabled firing at temperatures exceeding 1,100°C. This technological advancement allowed for the creation of durable, low-porosity vessels suitable for holding liquids. In addition, the use of the potter’s wheel made it possible to produce well-balanced forms efficiently, leading to the development of refined new vessel types.
This exhibition brings together outstanding examples of Sueki ware produced across Japan from the Kofun to Heian periods. Visitors are invited to experience the creativity and ingenuity of ancient artisans.
