This exhibition is the first major retrospective held ten years after the death of Natsuyuki Nakanishi (1935–2016), one of Japan’s leading postwar artists. It traces his artistic trajectory from the late 1950s and explores his distinctive approach to painting.
Nakanishi’s works do not depict specific subjects and cannot be categorized as either figurative or abstract. Instead, they are grounded in fundamental questions such as how a painting emerges and where painting exists. Through this exhibition, viewers are invited to reconsider the nature and possibilities of painting in the present day.
