Volkstedt, established in 1762 in Thuringia, was the first porcelain manufactory in the region. Georg Heinrich Macheleid received permission in 1760 to establish a porcelain works at Sitzendorf, before the manufactory was transferred to Volkstedt in 1762. Under Christian Nonne in the later eighteenth century, it flourished through finely painted wares, Rococo-inspired forms and richly modelled decorative objects, establishing Volkstedt as an important centre of Thuringian porcelain production.
