FANG ZHAORAN was an important figure in the development of modern Taiwanese painting, known for his sustained engagement with the historical landscapes and cultural heritage of his native Tainan. Born in Tainan in 1923, he began pursuing a career in painting after his self-taught work View from Wenchang Pavilion was selected for the First Taiwan Governor-General's Art Exhibition in 1938. He was subsequently selected for the Third through Sixth editions of the exhibition, and in 1941 travelled to Tokyo to study Western painting at the Suzuki Painting Institute under Suzuki Chikuma and Ataka Yasugorō. After the Second World War, he received a Special Selection award in the Western Painting section of the First Taiwan Provincial Art Exhibition and continued to exhibit in the Provincial Exhibition and Southern Taiwan Art Exhibition. Drawing extensively on the temples, historic architecture, landscapes and figures of Tainan, he worked in oil and watercolour. From the 1960s onward, he expanded his activities in Japan and later settled there under the name '東方昭然', continuing to present works inspired by the landscapes, history and cultural heritage of Taiwan. Rooted in the cultural memory of his native Taiwan while employing the visual language of Western painting, his practice occupies a distinctive position in the development of modern Taiwanese art and in the cultural exchange between Taiwan and Japan.
