FANG JUNBI was one of the important female artists of twentieth-century China and a pioneering figure in the synthesis of Chinese and Western painting traditions. She went to France in 1912 at the age of fourteen, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, and in 1920 gained admission to the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, becoming the first Chinese female student admitted to the school. Following her return to China in 1925, she studied traditional Chinese painting with Gao Jianfu and Gao Qifeng, leading figures of the Lingnan School, and gradually incorporated traditional brushwork into her practice. In 1924, two of her works were selected for the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français in Paris, with The Flute Player subsequently appearing on the cover of the art magazine Les Annales and attracting considerable attention. Working across oil painting and ink, and exploring subjects including figures, flowers and landscapes, she developed a distinctive visual language that brought Western approaches to light and space into dialogue with the expressive traditions of Chinese painting. Her practice represents an important chapter in the artistic exchange between China and the West and in the development of modern Chinese painting.
