  UTAGAWA HIROSHIGE was a leading ukiyo-e artist of late Edo-period Japan and a pivotal figure in the development of Japanese landscape printmaking. From the 1830s, he devoted himself increasingly to landscape, producing celebrated series including The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō, The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō and One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. Through bold compositions, elevated viewpoints and subtle bokashi colour gradation, Hiroshige conveyed the poetry of seasons, weather, urban life and nature. His innovative prints were widely received in Europe through Japonisme and influenced a number of Western artists.
