  BERNARD BUFFET was one of the leading figurative painters of postwar France. He developed a highly distinctive style characterized by hard, incisive black outlines and a singular use of color, depicting a wide range of subjects including figures, landscapes, still lifes, flowers, and circus scenes. His early works in particular are marked by a sense of tension that evokes the anxiety and isolation of postwar society. In addition to oil painting, Buffet produced an extensive body of graphic works, including lithographs and drypoints. In 1971, he was appointed Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur. In 1973, the Bernard Buffet Museum, dedicated to the collection and exhibition of his works, opened in Nagaizumi, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
