  NAWA KOHEI is a contemporary artist whose practice has centred on sculpture while exploring the relationship between materiality and perception. In his early 2000s series PixCell, taxidermied animals and everyday objects are covered with transparent spheres, transforming their surfaces and questioning the boundary between physical matter and visual image. He subsequently developed a range of series including Trans, Ether and Force, translating phenomena such as gravity, fluid dynamics and light into sculptural forms. Begun in 2011, Direction further incorporates the movement of liquid pigment and gravity into the process of painting, establishing a distinctive practice that moves fluidly between sculpture and painting.
  
  Direction, begun in 2011, is a series of paintings that incorporates the flow of liquid pigment and gravity into the process of pictorial creation. By tilting the canvas and allowing carefully adjusted pigment to flow from its upper edge, Nawa enables gravity to guide the pigment in a single direction, generating lines and fields across the surface. In the present work, the stark contrast between black and white and the repeated diagonal bands create a sustained sense of visual movement. At the same time, the forms are generated not through direct mark-making by the artist, but through the movement of pigment governed by physical forces, prompting a reconsideration of the roles of the artist's hand, chance and material agency in painting.
