  MATSUTANI TAKESADA, Japanese contemporary artist, who became a member of Gutai Art Association in 1963. He established the technique of using pencil shading into his works, and is active at the forefront of the world with a main section at the Venice Biennale in 2017 and a solo exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in 2019.

  A Sixty-Year Friendship, A Heartfelt Gift from
  MATSUTANI TAKESADA to ANDO TADAO and His Wife
  Matsutani Takesada, a key artist of Japan's Gutai Art Association, shared a friendship with architect Ando Tadao and his wife spanning more than sixty years. The two first became acquainted in their youth and, despite pursuing different paths in art and architecture, maintained a close and enduring relationship over the decades. After settling in Paris, Matsutani continued to keep in close contact with Ando Tadao and his wife, occasionally conveying his friendship and greetings through his artworks.
  The present work is a new work created by Matsutani in 2026 and was specially dedicated to Ando Tadao and his wife, with a rare and clearly documented dedication. The image centers on the motif of a turtle. Since ancient times, the turtle has been regarded as a symbol of longevity, good fortune, and the continuity of life. The traditional saying "The crane lives for a thousand years, the turtle for ten thousand" reflects the auspicious meaning of the motif. Through this simple yet deeply evocative image, Matsutani conveys his sincere wishes for the health and longevity of Ando Tadao and his wife, while also commemorating the profound friendship shared between the two artists for more than six decades.
  Particularly noteworthy is that the present work is being offered as a charity auction lot. The work will be auctioned by Jo's Auction, with the proceeds donated to support communities affected by the Kumamoto earthquake, allowing art to convey compassion and goodwill to those in need.
  The significance of this work therefore extends far beyond that of an ordinary work of art.
