  MATSUTANI TAKESADA, Japanese contemporary artist, who became a member of Gutai Art Association in 1963. He established the technique of using pencil shading into his works, and is active at the forefront of the world with a main section at the Venice Biennale in 2017 and a solo exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in 2019.

  Pendulum (1989) exemplifies the mature abstract language that Matsutani Takesada developed during the late 1980s, uniting organic form with the repetitive discipline of drawing. Suspended along a central vertical axis, the principal form appears to descend under the force of gravity, while the contrast between the upper arc and the dense black mass below generates a composition in which stillness and motion are perceived simultaneously. Delicate tonal gradations and fluid contours evoke the artist's sustained accumulation of pencil marks, transforming duration, energy, and material tension into a palpable visual experience.
  Rooted in the corporeal concerns of the Gutai Art Association, Matsutani gradually evolved, following his move to France, toward a more minimal and contemplative pictorial language in which the act of drawing itself became the essential subject. Within its restrained composition, Pendulum conveys invisible forces akin to gravity, time, and breath, offering a distilled expression of the artist's mature practice during the 1980s.
