  Christo Coetzee was the only South African artist to join the Gutai Art Association. After arriving in Japan around 1960, he worked under the guidance of Yoshihara Jiro before returning to South Africa. This Christmas card, believed to have been sent from South Africa to Yoshihara in Ashiya in 1968, provides rare documentary evidence of their continued correspondence. It also reflects the international network fostered by the Gutai movement and its enduring artistic connections beyond Japan.
  
  CHRISTO COETZEE emerged on the international avant-garde scene in the late 1950s, engaging closely with experimental movements in Europe and Japan. His work is defined by an audacious use of non-art materials, assembling ping-pong balls, dried roots, bicycle parts, and other everyday objects onto the picture surface to probe material density and the instability of visual perception. A distinctly Baroque sensibility often permeates his compositions, where decorative impulses intersect with radical experimentation.
