  YOSHIHARA JIRO developed his practice through a sustained progression from figuration to pure abstraction, through increasingly action- and material-oriented painting, and ultimately towards an extreme economy of form. His first solo exhibition in 1928 featured paintings of fish, after which he developed Surrealist-inflected works influenced by Giorgio de Chirico. From around 1936, he moved towards pure abstraction, becoming a leading figure in the Japanese avant-garde before the war. After the war, he initially returned to figurative subjects such as birds and girls, before making a decisive shift towards line-based abstraction in the 1950s, influenced in part by his exchanges with avant-garde calligraphers of the Bokujinkai group. In the latter half of the decade, his involvement with Gutai and his collaboration with Michel Tapié led him to explore painting that emphasised action and the material presence of paint. From around 1963, he moved away from this Informel-related approach, transforming his motif of the circle drawn in a single stroke into sharply defined, hard-edged abstractions. His late paintings, often centred on a white circle against black or a black circle against white, reduce the pictorial vocabulary to its essentials, intensifying the tension between form, void and field of colour while generating a remarkable sense of spiritual presence and expansiveness.
