  SHIRAGA KAZUO was a central figure of the Gutai Art Association and a leading artist of the postwar Japanese avant-garde. In his "Foot Painting," begun in 1954, he painted with his feet while suspended from a rope, making bodily movement an essential part of the creative process. After joining Gutai in 1955, he continued to explore the relationship between paint, body, and action. Following his ordination in 1971 and religious training in 1974, he increasingly focused on Buddhism and created numerous Enso paintings using a squeegee. The Enso, a circular form symbolizing enlightenment and ultimate truth in Zen Buddhism, became for Shiraga a concentrated act connecting body, mind, and spirit. His Enso works mark a transition from the physical action of his earlier practice toward a deeper spiritual inquiry.
