  NARA YOSHITOMO, Japanese contemporary artist and sculptor. He is one of the internationally acclaimed Japanese contemporary artists. He has exhibited extensively overseas, won the 2010 New York International Center Prize and the 2013 Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Art Encouragement Prize. He broke his own auction record in 2019 and has been ranked in the top 100 artists by Artprice for six consecutive years.

  Created in 1998, the present work depicts a child suffering from mumps alongside the word "Mumps," the English term for the illness. At the time, mumps remained a familiar childhood disease in Japan, with periodic outbreaks occurring primarily among children, and for many it was closely associated with memories of childhood.
  While the child's swollen cheeks convey a sense of physical vulnerability and unease, the expression also reveals a strong will that refuses to yield to illness. An inner strength directed toward recovery overlaps with the defiant spirit characteristic of the figures in Nara's work.
  Bringing together vulnerability and strength, defenselessness and resistance, the present work succinctly embodies the complex inner world of the children that Nara so distinctively portrays.
