Tsunesaku Maeda was born in 1926 in Kunya Village, Shimoniikawa District, Toyama Prefecture (now Nyuzen Town). After graduating from Toyama Normal School, he entered Musashino Art School and graduated in 1953. He held his first solo exhibition in 1955 and won the Grand Prize at the International Young Artists Exhibition in 1957, after which he studied in France. In 1961, he received the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo Prize and participated in the 2nd India Triennale in 1971. From 1979, he held traveling solo exhibitions throughout Japan and served as professor at Kyoto City University of Arts, and later as professor, president, and chairman of Musashino Art University. He received the Purple Ribbon Medal and the Order of the Sacred Treasure, among other honors. He died of heart disease on October 13, 2007, at the age of 81.
