UEMAE CHIYU, born in Kyoto and was an early member of the Gutai Art Association. He constructed his surfaces by repeatedly embedding nails, fabric fragments, and fibers into the support, building the work through sustained, repetitive action. His works quietly present the accumulation of material and the traces of time, occupying a distinctive position within Gutai. The restrained palette and tactile surfaces internalize the intensity of gesture, and his practice has been increasingly reappraised in recent years.
