Recurring motifs in Matsutani’s work—such as “flow,” “proliferation,” circles, and drops—suggest processes of generation, transformation, and circulation.
These elements form the conceptual and visual foundation of his artistic exploration, and this work exemplifies these concerns and represents significant work within Matsutani’s mature oeuvre. The notion of “flow,” explicitly referenced in the title, lies at the heart of his artistic philosophy. The gently expanding forms and continuous linear movements evoke a sense of material energy in motion, suggesting an ongoing process of transformation within the pictorial space. The restrained yet dynamic composition conveys both organic vitality and contemplative depth. Flowing 1 thus stands as a compelling example of Matsutani’s mature abstract language developed during his years in Paris, reflecting his sustained investigation into the relationship between material, time, and transformation. Matsutani remains active in the contemporary art scene and is currently represented by Hauser & Wirth.
