Since joining the Gutai Art Association in the 1950s, Tanaka continuously explored a distinctive visual language composed of "lines" and "circles." In her later paintings, these elements evolved into networks of lines that extend and intersect like electric wires. The layered curves and circular nodes appear to trace the transmission and circulation of energy across the pictorial field.
During the 1970s, Tanaka's paintings gradually shifted from the relatively simple structures of her earlier works toward more dynamic and liberated linear compositions. The dense and rhythmic arrangement seen in this work intertwines color, line, and space, generating a visual order that is at once chaotic and harmonious. It demonstrates the artist's unique approach of transforming bodily movement, time, and spiritual energy into painterly expression.
TANAKA ATSUKO, Japanese artist, one of the main members of the Gutai Art Association, created "electric clothes."She then began to turn them into paintings, and continued to work on the same theme throughout her life. Since then, she has been highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad. In Japan, her work has been re-evaluated since the 1980s, and in recent years she has attracted even more attention, and is now regarded as a great talent on a par with KUSAMA YAYOI and ONO YOKO.
