NOMATA MINORU has developed a body of work across painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing, using "imaginary architecture" as his central motif. His visionary structures and uninhabited landscapes, at once futuristic and retrospective, guide viewers into worlds that transcend time and space. By refusing to present a single "correct" interpretation, his works grant freedom of meaning and invite the discovery of an inner universe.
The foundations of his practice lie in his childhood experiences: factory chimneys and steel towers, the traditional designs from his parents' dye shop, and the rapid urban development of Tokyo in the 1960s. While studying at Tokyo University of the Arts, he encountered the works of Charles Sheeler and Thomas Bayrle, which encouraged him to adopt architecture as a motif embodying his thoughts. Influenced also by Philip K. Dick and Brian Eno, Nomata has, for more than forty years, continued to depict the memories and future visions of the city.
