SHINGU SUSUMU is an internationally renowned artist celebrated for kinetic sculptures powered by natural energies such as wind and water. After studying painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, he moved to Italy in 1960 on a government scholarship and studied under Franco Gentilini at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, where he presented three-dimensional works by sewing canvas onto wire frames.
Returning to Japan in 1967, he gained attention with his solo exhibition Form of the Wind at Hibiya Park and exhibited at Expo'70 in Osaka. In 1971 he was invited as a visiting artist to Harvard University's Center for Visual Arts. Since then, he has consistently created site-specific sculptures animated by natural forces, many permanently installed in public spaces worldwide.
Representative works include Gift of the Wind (1985, MBTA Porter Square Station, Boston) and Never Ending Sky (1994, Kansai International Airport, Osaka), both recognized as symbolic landmarks. In addition to collaborations with architects such as Renzo Piano, Shingu has pursued diverse projects globally and expanded his practice into picture books and theater productions.
