    ALEXANDRE DEFAUX, a French landscape and animal painter, initially followed the classical tradition of landscape painting but was influenced by the Barbizon school after encountering it in 1850. He regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1859 and was named a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1881. His works are held in the museums of Barbizon, Caen, and Rouen.
