KAYAMA MATAZO, a Japanese painter and printmaker, born into a traditional family of artists—his grandfather was a Japanese painter, and his father a kimono designer for Kyoto Nishijin textiles. After graduating from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and studying under YAMAMOTO KYUJIN, he pursued Japanese-style painting. Inspired by a wide range of Western art, including Bruegel, Rousseau, and Picasso, he integrated modern techniques into his work, becoming a key figure in postwar Japanese painting innovation. He held his first solo exhibition in 1955 and participated in the Guggenheim International Art Exhibition in 1958. He later became an honorary professor at Tokyo University of the Arts.
