BERNARD BUFFET, French painter representing the postwar figurative painting world. He created a unique style characterized by hard, sharp, thick, wire-like outlines and nearly monotone colors, which, together with the anxious expressions of his figures, express the artist's anxious and desolate post-World War II mental landscape. In 1971, he was awarded the Legion of Honor. In 1973, the Bernard Buffet Museum opened in Nagaizumi-cho, Shizuoka Prefecture, which houses and exhibits only his works. Major collections: Bernard Buffet Museum, Otani Memorial Museum of Art, Nishinomiya City.
