MARCEL DUCHAMP, a French-born artist, had a decisive influence on 20th-century art. He began painting at the age of 14, producing landscape paintings influenced by Impressionism. In 1912, he created "Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2," which evoked Cubism and Futurism. The following year, he moved away from traditional painting and introduced the concept of "readymades," transforming everyday objects like a bicycle wheel, a urinal, and a shovel into artworks based on the principle of "aesthetic indifference."
