ZHANG WEI is considered one of the first abstract painters in China. He began his career in the 1970s as a member of the unofficial artist group "Muming," aiming to express individual artistic approaches different from the established art forms of the time. In the early 1980s, encounters with major Western painters such as those associated with Abstract Expressionism, like Jackson Pollock and Robert Rauschenberg, significantly influenced Zhang Wei's artistic practice. His paintings particularly incorporate the intuitive approach of Action Painting. His works blend techniques from traditional Chinese ink and calligraphy with Western modern painting.
