    Xu Bi, styled Shouheng and also known by the art name Songge, was from Jiading, Shanghai. He achieved the top rank of the imperial examination (Zhuangyuan) in the first year of the Tongzhi reign.

    Weng Zengyuan (1836–1887), with the courtesy name Zhongyun and the pen name Shizhai, was from Changshu (now part of Jiangsu). He was the grandson of Weng Xincun, a Grand Secretary of the Imperial Cabinet, and the second son of Weng Tongshu.
