He was regarded as one of the "Four Talented Scholars of Wu" along with Tang Yin, Wen Zhengming, and Xu Zhenqing. Together with Wen Zhengming and Wang Chong, he was considered a representative calligrapher of the mid-Ming period. In his early years, his regular script was meticulous, following the styles of Zhao Mengfu and Chu Suiliang, and he also studied the works of Ouyang Xun and Yu Shinan, striving to emulate the "Two Wangs" (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi). In cursive script, he adopted the styles of Li Yong, Huang Tingjian, and Mi Fu, demonstrating profound skill. In his later years, he emphasized transformation in his calligraphy, producing works with great character and elegance.
